Ultimate Mining Tycoon Gems and Jewelcrafting Guide
Mine gemstones, cut and polish them, and build a jewel spine that sells beside your Power Core line.
Gems are Ultimate Mining Tycoon’s second income spine. Ten gemstones spawn across The Mine’s layers, and jewelcrafting machines multiply their value far beyond raw dumps. This guide covers spawn depths, strength gates, Gem Cutter / Polisher / Prismatic routing, and when to fold gems into metal lines with Prestige Machines transmuters.

Why gems matter
| Benefit | Detail |
|---|---|
| Parallel cash | Sell while metal belts process Power Cores |
| Depth payoff | Painite and Musgravite dwarf early Tin hauls |
| Prestige combo | Gem↔Bar transmuters unlock hybrid lines |
| Low competition | Many players ignore gems until late |
Mixing gems onto ore furnace belts early causes jams — keep a separate spine until you own Gem to Bar.
Gem table (base values)
| Gem | Base value | Common depth band | Strength |
|---|---|---|---|
| Topaz | $75 | Surface – Depths (~0–549m) | 6 |
| Emerald | $200 | Depths – Bedrock (~150–849m) | 14 |
| Sapphire | $250 | Depths – Bedrock (~150–849m) | 14 |
| Ruby | $300 | Depths – Bedrock (~150–849m) | 18 |
| Diamond | $1,500 | Depths – Mantle (~400–1800m) | 22 |
| Poudretteite | $1,700 | Bedrock – Primordial (~550–1199m) | 75 |
| Zultanite | $2,300 | Primordial – Tectonic (~1000–1599m) | 110 |
| Grandidierite | $4,500 | Tectonic – Mantle (~1400–2100m) | 120 |
| Musgravite | $5,800 | Mantle – Underworld (~1900–2900m*) | 150 |
| Painite | $12,000 | Mantle – Underworld (~2100–4500m*) | 200 |
*v0.5.5 raised Musgravite max depth to 2900 and Painite to 4500. Always verify in-game tooltips after patches (Updates Hub).
Diamond Pickaxe ($2.5M, strength 400) mines all gems. Weaker pickaxes stop at strength gates — see Equipment.
Jewelcrafting machine chain
[Gem branch from Unloader] → Gem Cutter (~+40%) → Polisher → Prismatic Gem Crucible (optional) → Sell
| Machine | Role |
|---|---|
| Gem Cutter | Cuts raw gems; large early value jump |
| Gem / item Polisher | Finish polish before sell |
| Prismatic Gem Crucible | Combine two gems (~15% combine bonus) |
| Jewel Assembler (if owned) | Late jewel products |
| Prospector (stone path) | ~5% chance stone → gem |
Build this column beside your metal Furnace row. Overflow splitters keep byproducts off the gem mouth.
Early vs mid vs late gem strategy
| Stage | Focus |
|---|---|
| Early ($0–$100K) | Ignore deep gems; Topaz/Emerald if found; buy Gem Cutter when metal spine sells |
| Mid ($100K–$5M) | Dedicated Crystal Depths trips; dual unloader or sorted hauls |
| Late / prestige | Painite runs; Gem to Bar into Power Core; Bar to Gem for Cutter/Prismatic on bars |
Early Game Money still prioritizes metal furnaces first — gems are additive, not a replacement for your first Stamper.
Mining tips for gem hauls
- Equip Diamond+ pickaxe before Mantle gem farming.
- Do not blast Painite walls with C4 — explosives destroy gems in radius (Explosives and Obsidian).
- Fill backpack + vehicle; dump at gem-capable unloader branch.
- After v0.5.5, factory items save — mid-belt gems persist between sessions.
- Prospector lines turn excess stone into occasional gems — useful dust/stone factories.
Prestige interactions
- Ore Upgrader does not upgrade gems.
- Gem to Bar / Bar to Gem (4 Medals each) enable hybrid factories — details on Prestige Machines.
- Combined Cutter + Prismatic path can add roughly ~55% before metal multipliers when using both transmuters.
Layout sketch (plot)
Metal: Unloader → Upgrader → Stone → Smelter → … → Power Core → Sell
Gems: Unloader split → Cutter → Polisher → Prismatic → Sell
└──(Gem to Bar)──→ merge into metal after prestige
Complexity still caps at 4,000 — delete decorative belts before adding Prismatic.
Common gem mistakes
| Mistake | Result |
|---|---|
| Gems on furnace belt | Jams / wrong machines |
| Selling raw Painite | Miss Cutter/Polisher multipliers |
| Nuking gem veins | Destroyed inventory value |
| Skipping Diamond pickaxe | Soft-locked on high-strength gems |
| Building Prismatic before Cutter | Starved combine inputs |

Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions.
How many gems are in Ultimate Mining Tycoon?
Ten gemstones from Topaz ($75) to Painite ($12,000), each with depth bands and strength requirements.
Do gems go through the Smelter?
No. Use Gem Cutter, Polisher, and jewelcrafting machines on a separate belt — or Gem to Bar after prestige.
Which pickaxe mines every gem?
Diamond Pickaxe ($2.5M, strength 400) is the first pickaxe that breaks all gems and ores.
What does Prismatic Gem Crucible do?
It combines two gems for a bonus (about 15%). Feed it cut gems after the Gem Cutter for best results.
Did Musgravite and Painite depths change?
Yes. v0.5.5 raised Musgravite max depth to 2900 and Painite to 4500. Check Updates after patches.
