Ultimate Mining Tycoon Mine Layers and Ores Guide
Navigate The Mine from Surface (0m) to The Underworld (2,800m+).
The Mine is an shared 8-layer geological environment in Ultimate Mining Tycoon. It regenerates on a 100-minute collapse timer, resetting tunnels while preserving player progress on surface plots. 20 ore types spawn at depth-stratified zones — from Tin ($10) on the surface to Unobtainium ($30,000) in The Underworld. This guide maps every layer, explains strength gates, and links haul strategy to your factory.

How mining depth works
Descend from the mine entrance. Depth meters increase as you go down. Each geological layer hosts specific ores at guaranteed depth ranges, though rare small clusters of any ore can appear off-depth.
Ores stop spawning past 3,000m except Rhodium and Unobtainium, which extend to 5,000m. Pickaxe strength (formerly hardness) must meet or exceed ore strength to mine efficiently.
Obsidian (v0.5.0+) requires explosives — pickaxes alone cannot break large obsidian chunks.
The 8 geological layers
| Layer | Depth range | Character |
|---|---|---|
| Surface Layer | 0m – ~50m | Tutorial ores; weakest stone |
| Shallow Caverns | ~50m – ~200m | Silver, transitional metals |
| Bedrock Zone | ~200m – ~800m | Structural stone; Titanium approaches |
| Deep Caverns | ~800m – ~1,400m | High-value metals increase |
| Magma Adjacent | ~1,400m – ~1,900m | Heat-themed rock; stronger gates |
| Crystal Depths | ~1,900m – ~2,300m | Crystalline ores; box hitboxes fixed v0.5.0 |
| The Underworld | ~2,300m – ~2,800m | Adamantium, Rhodium, Unobtainium zone |
| Primordial (events) | Variable | Special spawn contexts |
Exact meter boundaries shift slightly between patches — use ore name labels (now shown even when strength is insufficient, per v0.5.0) as ground truth.

Pickaxe strength gates
Eleven pickaxes tier from Rusty (free) to Unobtainium ($25M). Key breakpoints:
| Pickaxe | Approximate cost | Strength | Unlocks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rusty | Free | 1 | Surface Tin/Copper |
| Copper | ~$50 | Low | Iron zone |
| Iron | ~$500 | Mid-low | Silver |
| Steel | ~$5,000 | Mid | Gold, shallow Titanium |
| Gold | ~$50,000 | Mid-high | Deep Bedrock |
| Titanium | ~$250,000 | High | Deep ores |
| Infernum | ~$750,000 | High | Magma/Crystal entry |
| Diamond | ~$2,500,000 | 400 | All ores and gems |
| Mithril | ~$5,000,000 | 600 | Underworld efficiency |
| Unobtainium | ~$25,000,000 | 1000 | Maximum mining speed |
Diamond Pickaxe is the first tool that mines every ore and gem. See Pickaxes Tier List for rankings.
Layer-by-layer progression strategy
Surface (0–50m)
Tutorial zone. Mine Tin and Copper for Early Game Money. Upgrade to Copper and Iron pickaxes before pushing deeper.
Shallow (50–200m)
Iron and Silver dominate. Introduce Minidumper hauls. Start furnace processing — raw sell underperforms.
Bedrock (200–800m)
Gold and Titanium appear. Requires Steel or better. Backpack upgrades essential — fewer trips with higher value per slot.
Deep (800m – 1,900m)
Uranium, Platinum, and premium gems. Factory needs Alloy Maker tier machines to multiply value. Consider Super Crawler logistics.
Underworld (2,300m+)
Adamantium, Rhodium, Unobtainium — endgame income. Requires Diamond/Mithril pickaxes, explosives for obsidian pockets, and optimized Factory Layout. Prestige Ore Upgrader transmutes lower ores here without mining them — see Prestige and Medals.
Collapse timer (100 minutes)
The mine resets periodically, collapsing tunnels. Effects:
- Carved paths may refill with stone
- Players inside should exit before warnings
- Ore nodes respawn on regeneration cycles
Plan hauls — do not leave a full Exa-Drill load underground when collapse warnings appear.
Ore recovery and persistence
Backpack, vehicle, and unloader contents save on logout. Prestige should clear stranded mine inventory — if ores persist after prestiging, rejoin server (fixed in v0.5.x). Ore Recovery Centre retrieves lost minerals after disconnects.
Explosives in deep mining
Purchase from Madattak’s Dynamite Shack. Hierarchy runs Dynamite → advanced explosives → Nukes for mass stone clearing. Use explosives to destroy low-value ore blocking inventory space, or break Obsidian walls. Details: Equipment.
Multiplayer mining etiquette
The mine is shared. Do not trap other players in drilled tunnels. Drill vehicles (Vehicle Logistics) can reshape ramps everyone uses — carve with community access in mind.

Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions.
How many layers are in The Mine?
Eight geological layers from Surface (0m) down to The Underworld (2,800m+), plus special contexts like the Primordial zone.
What is the most valuable ore?
Unobtainium Ore sells for $30,000 raw. Rhodium Ore also reaches $15,000 and spawns deeper (to 5000m).
Why can I not mine an ore block?
Your pickaxe strength is too low. Upgrade at Happy Pickaxe Man. Obsidian requires explosives, not pickaxes.
Do ores spawn outside their layer?
Yes, in small amounts. Guaranteed spawns occur at listed depths, but rare off-depth clusters can appear.
What happens when the mine collapses?
On a ~100-minute timer, tunnels regenerate. Exit before collapse if you are deep with a full vehicle load.
Does the Ore Upgrader replace deep mining?
It transmutes ores one tier higher, reducing need for lower depths but not replacing Unobtainium runs entirely.
